Administrative / biographical background

North and South Ambersham were both originally tithinge of Steep in Hampshire, and neither have ever had a parish church. Until the 19th century their inhabitants would have been expected to go to Steep for baptisms, marriages and burials - although there is little evidence that they did so in modern times. A transcript of the Steep parish registers is available in the West Sussex Record Office. For ecclesiastical purposes North Ambersham was associated with Fernhurst from at least the early nineteenth century and was joined to that parish in 1912. It became a civil parish in 1844 when it was transferred from Hampshire to Sussex, and was united with Fernhurst in 1972.

Records relating to North Ambersham may also therefore be found among those of South Ambersham, Pernhurst and Steep
