The arrangement of deeds under the short title of the trust has been based on information derived from the Appendix to the Report of the Commissioners for inquiring into the state of the Roads (1840), and from the County Report for Sussex by the Secretary of State (1852) derived from returns made to him under 3 and 4 William IV, c80 (1833).

Administrative / biographical background

The consolidating act 3 George IV, c126 (1822) required trustees to enroll conveyances of land of stopped-up roads with the Clerk of the Peace, and a model form is given in 4 George IV, c95 (1823). (Note also the consolidating act 5 and 6 William IV, c50, 1835).

The power to alter roads was generally incorporated into the local acts under which the trusts acted, but the duty of enrolling deeds of conveyance with the Clerk of the Peace was not necessarily included.
