Hesket (New Market), p. Caldbeck: bargain and sale of freehold parcel 20 yds. square, "fronting the Market Place" on the west end of Cuddy House, with provision for future building development, and for Lawson development next door (as to where the timber may lie) (Sir Wilfrid to Timothy Twentyman of Hesket (New Market), blacksmith, with John Grainger of Bromfield gent. as third party) for 5s.0d., rent £1 p.a., 1755; Hesket Demesne Colliery lease for 21 years, in the fields "from Hesket Bridge, up Gategill, So far as a Sycamore Tree in the Croft Hedge, and from thence .. north of the Limekiln .." (Sir Gilfrid to Clement Oliphant of Castle Sowerby and Daniel Relf of Sebergham, yeomen), for the Upper Seam of Coal, rent (per 4-load skip) 2d. if seam be less than 12" thick, 3d if it be 12"-18" thick, 4d. if it be 18" thick (the daily allowance of 1 corf of coal per hagger is to be exempted from the rent); lessees to keep 2 men constantly on the job, and to keep weekly accounts for lessor's inspection; if works cease for a month, this lease shall be void, 1767
