1156. Herne Bay Steamer No. 1, Fame (ND & NE). Jul. 1832, Dec. 1833, May, Jun. 1834. 11 items.
Two 60 horse power side lever boat engines, with 42 inch cylinders, 4 foot strokes.Cross-section of the boat and engines, plan of the engine deck beams, longitudinal section of engine and boiler, plan of the engines and boiler and sleepers etc., side view of gangway wale - reverse drawings made in the London office; cross-section of headstocks; engine and paddle shafts - coloured original and coloured reverse drawings; spur wheels - partially shaded original and partially shaded reverse drawings; proposed front of boiler for 2 60 horse engines (drawing made in Jul. 1832 and used for the Fame in 1833); headstocks, columns, plummer block etc., with note from Gilbert Hamilton to Richard Lewis attached. The headstock, paddle shaft and spur wheel drawings bear letter codes.
Original Portfolio or 'Book' No. 875. Catalogue of Old Engines p. 318.
For the Margate Steam Packet Co. The boat ran between London and Herne Bay. The boat is mentioned in T. Tredgold, The Steam Engine, p. 474. The Catalogue of Old Engines says that the boat was owned by the Herne Bay Co., but Engine Order Book No. 12 and Boat Engine Book No. 4 make it clear that the Fame was operated by the Margate Steam Packet Co.
