Description (What the record is about)
-
Maroon half-leather bound album measuring 272x372mm, generally sound apart from tears and weakness at head and tail of spine. Prints mounted two or three to a page. The captioning is erratic. In the first section (prints 1-36) the majority have pencilled captions overwritten in ink. Prints 37-62 are uncaptioned. Most of the photographs in the third section (prints 63-165) have pencilled captions, in more than one hand and in varying degrees of detail. The contents of the album can be broken down as follows:. Prints 1-36 Assam-Tibet Exploration, 1913. Continuation from Mss Eur F157/481, recording Bailey's journey to the falls on the Tsangpo at Pemakochung. The photographs cover the period 16-27 July 1913. There are some duplicates from this series at Mss Eur F157/488. Prints 31-36, mainly portrait studies of the Aka people, were taken by R.S. Kennedy during the 'Aka Promenade' of 1914 (for others photographs taken during this expedition and narrative report, see Mss Eur F157/324). Prints 37-62 First World War in France, 1915. In March 1915 Bailey made two trips to France, on the first occasion taking remounts over and on the second a detachment of troops. Prints 37-52 appear to relate to these journeys. Prints 53-62, which are in a different format (142x142mm), shows Indian troops in Northern France, and are probably not Bailey's work. Print 62, which shows a wounded man being carried on board ship on a stretcher, is possibly a photograph of Bailey, who was wounded at Gallipoli in August 1915 and invalided home. Prints 63-165 Scenes on the North-West Frontier during Bailey's period as Political Officer in Kohat and Charsadda, 1916-17.
