MM5 Surveys: Various Preferments

Survey volume MM5 is the fifth in the series of thirteen 'MM' volumes, which covers various preferments, which were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners under mid nineteenth century parliamentary legislation.; The volume covers the surveys carried out on behalf of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners by their appointed Land Agents, Messrs. Cluttons, Messrs. Smith & Watkins and Messrs. Smiths & Gore. The preferments in this volume include the following: Llanbister Prebend Estates (transfer date unknown); the Bangor Bishoprick Estates commuted to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 31 December 1883 (effective date), which was by deed on 30 April 1884; the Exeter Deanery Estates vested in the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 12 May 1848 (published in the London Gazette by Order in Council) and on 17 January 1861 by vacancy; and the Durham Chapter Estates commuted to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 29 September 1870 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette on 10 December 1872 by Order in Council.; These surveys were essential to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, as it was the most comprehensive way of clearly ascertaining the extent and condition of the preferments that had been transferred. ; As preferments were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners from the Ecclesiastical Corporations, the various holdings of the estates were either kept or sold; the land agents supplied recommendatory advice on this matter with the survey reports.; The volume also has added annotations often regarding the disposal of property or land since the surveys were originally carried out and therefore incorporates later dates.; The geographical areas covered within the volume includes: the county of Radnorshire, parishes of Llanbister, Llandewey, Ystradenny, Llanfihangel, Rhyd Ithon, Abbey-cum-hir, Lananno and Llanbadarn Fynydd; the county of Carnarvonshire [Caernarvonshire], parish of Bangor; the county of Anglesey [Anglesea], parishes of Llanbeulan and Llandesilio; the county of Durham, parishes of Jarrow and Monkwearmouth; and the county of Devonshire, parish of Braunton.
