Report of visiting justices to gaol and bridewell
Essential alteration to female bridewell now progressing "at a very trifling expence" to effect a better classification of female prisoners.
Governor's report
Stated that 90 vagrants committed to prison since his last quarterly report, being exactly half the total of all prisoners, with a view to making their (the vagrants') punishment more severe. He recommended a reduced "Dietary" for vagrants as follows: If committed for one month or less 1½lbs. of bread daily. If committed for up to 2 months 1½lbs. of bread daily but additional gruel for breakfast and supper for remaining period. If committed for 3 months or more as above for first two months then full prison allowance but without extra bread for hard labour. This practice has been tried in other counties, producing good effects. Noted that many committals had been from local jurisdiction for which no charge can be made. The contractor conveying prisoners from Truro is paid by the county for carrying all prisoners, whether from local jurisdictions or otherwise, incurring a very heavy expense to the county.
Because of the spread of cholera morbus and particularly because the disease might be introduced to the prison by vagrants from infected places, the governor, in conjunction with the Surgeon, had fumigated the gaol with the result that not one case of the disease had appeared, and the hospital had been empty for many weeks.
