Jesse Burnley Broughton, born in 1904, worked in the offices of Howard and Bullough Ltd., textile machinists, Accrington [later part of Platt-Saco-Lowell], from 1917 to 1931, when he became an agent for the Co-operative Insurance Society. In 1941 he joined Ferranti Ltd., radio and electrical appliance manufacturers, Moston, Manchester, leaving in 1945 to run a shop but rejoining Ferranti's in their computer department in 1950, where he worked until his retirement in 1966.
