Description

Collection of ms and ts letters written between 1907 and 1917 to his parents, initially relating to his work on an agricultural estate in East Africa, but from August 1914 concerning his military service with the Kings African Rifles on scouting expeditions in East Africa, with the 1/5th Battalion Norfolk Regiment (163rd Brigade, 54th Division) in Egypt (January - March 1916); as ADC to the Divisional Commander, Major-General Sir Steuart Hare (April 1916 - January 1917); and finally, having volunteered for service in the Royal Flying Corps (January 1917), training in Egypt and in England and flying operations in France (from July 1917) with No.1 Squadron RFC (stationed at Bailleul) until he was killed on 28 July 1917; together with letters of condolence to his parents and other correspondence regarding his death and commemoration. Having originally planned to become a missionary before the war intervened, his religious beliefs continued to be of primary importance throughout his military service and this is reflected in the letters.
