[No.1]. Inscribed: 'These 6 pictures represent the customs of the Sumyés [bSam-yas] Gumpa, 30 or 40 miles from Lhasa. There are about 500 lamas in the gumpa, and it was established by Gyalpo Chétong Devtswa [Khri-sron- dehu-btsan:' see picture 2.no.3] 'about ......? years ago. The name of the festival here represented is called Do dé Chotpa: it takes place from the 10th to the 15th Assar (June). On the 10th it commemorates the birth of Pudma Gyalpo or Gooroo Rinpochi who was born in Oojain, the lamas represent the eight different forms which Gooroo Rinpochi assumed.'. '1. When the fair takes place the Gyalwa Rinpochi sends a representative from Lhasa who is No.1 in the picture who is called the Zimgakpa.'. '2. Is a representative from the Lhasa Raja, called Dunyur' [mbron-gner]. '3. A Kalun, Karchak Dunyur'. '4. A Zpngpun of Sumyés.'. '5. Is a child of the Pegur Devta, which was brought from Bakhturhargi (Bactria) his name is Kookok.'. '6. Konyurpun, the head of 108 Chohlakungs at Sumyés.'. '7. Is a daughter of the Zoar Raja. named Lachum mentarawa'. '10. is from the country of Gnatubchun: she had been thrown away by her parents and Lopun Rinpochi who was performing penance at the place saved her and afterwards married her: her mother's name was Pulbung and the girl's name was Pulbung Kala sita'. '11. is daughter of the Mon Raja named Zong Zong Gyalpo. Her name was Monmo Tashi Kyenden'. '12. is daughter of Dewa Shakya Raja of Bulbo or Nipal her name was Pulmo Shakya Dewa'. '13. is a daughter of a labourer of Takh, a village near Samyés, her name Kando yéshi sokygel'. '14. Guru Pudma Sumba'. '15. Pudma Gyelpo'. '16. Dorjéh Lolut'. '17. Nyima Hotsir'. '18. Shakya Sangyé'. '19. Singhé Dadot'. '20. Lohdun Choksé'. '21. Nagpa jhanag, there are 50 of them often dressed alike, when these 50 have gone their round, a sort of play is acted.'.
