LANCASTER; St.Peter Roman Catholic Church Records

In treating the mass of historical material concerning the Cathedral and other Catholic institutions of Lancaster, it seemed possible to make a clear-cut distinction only between the administrative records of the Diocese founded in 1924, ref.RCLa, and the rest, which largely concerned the local affairs of the Catholic priest and community in Lancaster ref.RCLn.

The present collection has lent itself only to a broad classification and the "general" section 2 below not only includes early documents of the mission but books and records bearing on various combinations of the topics treated individually in later sections of the list. Where possible, documents concerning a single topic have been placed under that heading but the scheme is necessarily ad hoc and searchers are advised to read the catalogue as a whole
