Gotherington District Nursing Association, formed in 1885 by Elizabeth Malleson, was the first rural association in the country. By 1904, with about 40 independent associations working in Gloucestershire, the need for a co-ordinating body was obvious, and in the following year the County Nursing Association was founded.
