A Local Board for Haywards Heath was formed in 1872 under the Local Government Act, 1858. Originally the Board was called St. Wilfrid's Local Board but was re-named Haywards Heath Local Board in May 1880. In 1895 the Local Board became an Urban District Council under the terms of the Local Government Acts of 1894.
Haywards Heath U.D.C. was abolished by the East Sussex Review Order in 1934 and its area formed part of the new Cuckfield U.D.C. See W.S.R.O. MP 1999 for a copy of the East Sussex Review Order.
