War Diary 17/1/1918 - MID
Wrote, April 1918, to Mrs Columbine, mother of Pte HG Columbine VC:
Dear Mrs Columbine, You will no doubt have been informed by the War Office that No 50720 Pte Columbine, HG is wounded and missing. He was in my sub-section and although I had not the luck to be with him on 22nd March, I heard what happened from those who were. He kept his gun firing to the last although the Germans had got into the trench on both sides of him and were throwing bombs at him. In the end he was seen to be hit by a bomb and very badly wounded. He was one of my best gun numbers and is a great loss to the Squadron. I deeply sympathise with you, but it may be some consolation to you that he has been recommended for a medal in token of his barvery. It was the bravest deed I ever heard of.
Yours sincerely, Charles Eade, Lt. 9th MG Sqn.
