Salt Duty

Sampson Cook, mate, and George Wardle Carlton, mariner of the ship 'Virtuous Grace' of Fowey stated on oath that between 5 and 19 Dec. last they shipped at Liverpool 7,633 bushels and 52lbs of British fishery salt to carry it to Fowey on account of Philip Rashleigh, esq., fish curer. They sailed from Liverpool on 20 Dec., arriving at Fowey on 9 Jan. From 20 to 24 Dec. they met with stormy weather and took in water, and more water up to the discharge of the cargo on 25 Feb. 519 bushels of salt were lost: Collector of Excise to cancel bond.

Thomas Martin, master, and John Billing, mate of the schooner 'Revenge' of Padstow stated on oath that they shipped at Liverpool, on 11 Feb. last 2,520 bushels of British fishery salt to carry it to Port Isaac, in the port of Padstow, on account of William Billing & Co., fish curers. They sailed from Liverpool on 14 Feb. and arrived at Port Isaac on 26 Mar. On the voyage bad weather caused an accident at Holyhead, when the vessel struck an anchor and took in water. 680 bushels of salt were lost: Collector of Excise to cancel bond.
