Custodial history

These documents were discovered in a wall-safe during alterations to a house in Woodchester, which is thought to have been a solicitors' office.

Administrative / biographical background

In his will of 23 October 1722, Robert Bridges of Woodchester gave to named trustees £500 to invest in the purchase of lands and tenements, and use the profits to clothe and apprentice one poor boy yearly, teach three poor boys to read and write and more if proceeds allowed. Until 1827, each boy was apprenticed with a fee of £5 and £2.10s for clothing.
