Custodial history

The reference C was used by the Sussex Archaeological Society for the listing of documents of a miscellaneous nature, almost exclusively deeds, received from a variety of sources between 1913 and 1932. The reference C was adopted since the letters A and B had already been used for mnemonic references. Other material given or deposited by the same individuals was often assigned to other collections. On the transfer of the Society's collections of documents to ESRO in 1982 the reference was altered to SAS/C.
