See William Foster's Guide to the India Office Records. pp. vi-vii, for an account of the destruction of Records in 1858-60. The Committee for examining the Papers consisted of Messrs. T. N. Waterfield (in charge of the Cannon Row Office Records), Christopher Waud (Book Office Registrar), Mark Napier (Chief Clerk in the Correspondence Department) and [Sir] John William Kaye (Political Secretary). Besides original letters from the Committee and the Secretary of State, the volume contains a number of original letters from Alex.
