Under an Act of 13 Geo. III c 82 (1773) no Lying-in Hospital could be established unless a licence had been obtained from the Justices of the Peace in General Quarter Sessions. A copy of the licence had to be enter in a book to be kept by the Clerk of the Peace. ; See also MC/R/5,6 for copies of licences 1791-1861, 1872-1884.
