ROMAN PLACE NAMES

The Roman names of places in Britain from I Horsley's Britannia Romana. Extracted by P.H.' A later hand has identified P.H. as 'Philip Hills of Colne Park, Essex'. This is Philip Hills, formerly Astle (1768-1830), antiquary. At f. 14v is a further title: 'Toponomia antiqua Britanniae or the ancient names of places in Britain including not only ancient British names but also those given by the Romand and Saxons'. An alphabetical list of Roman place names and modern equivalents, derived from John Horsley, 'Britannia Romana, or, The Roman Antiquities of Britain (London, 1732). At ff. 11-13 is a second list, derived from Thomas Gale, 'Antonini iter Britanniorum' (London, 1709).
