Description (What the record is about)
-
Five dervishes in a landscape. Mughal, c.1780. Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807. Inscribed above in Persian: 'tasvir-i darvishan' (a picture of dervishes); a smudged inscription in the lower left corner perhaps giving the name of an artist. Drawing; on an album leaf with outer mauve gilt-sprinkled border. 232 by 164 mm; page 481 by 364 mm. A shaikh sitting smoking a hookah tended by a young disciple, is engaged in discussion with a figure on the left who holds a rosary. Two dervishes in the foreground are seated apart, the one on the left playing a 'chartar'. In the background is a river with a hut on the bank. Note: The style and treatment of the landscape and figures indicate that this rather wiry line drawing must derive from an original of the Shah Jahan period, cf. J.1, 22.
