Administrative / biographical background

According to a cutting in the Hackney Gazette written at the time of his election, C.F.Yates, of 45 Downs Park Road, aged 50, had formerly worked in the family business of Yates & Sons, dyers. He was a councillor for the Downs Ward and a member of the Municipal Reform party. Also described as a prominent freemason, Yates had been chairman of the Rotary Club of Hackney, and had a close involvement in the Hackney Industrial and Recreational Society.
