File 21 Qatar

The Qatar subject files comprise confidential correspondence and other papers, sent and received by the Political Agent at Bahrain, relating to miscellaneous affairs concerning Qatar, including: ongoing disagreements between the Ruler of Bahrain, Shaikh Salmān bin Ḥamad Āl Khalīfah, and the Ruler of Qatar, Shaikh 'Abdullāh bin Jāsim Āl Thānī, over their competing claims to sovereignty of Zubarah; trade and imports into Qatar; the proposed taxation of Petroleum Concessions Limited (PCL) employees by the Ruler of Qatar; construction of a hospital in Doha; questions of succession, in response to the death of the Qatari heir, Shaikh Ḥamad bin 'Abdullāh Āl Thānī in 1948; the detention of a slave from Muscat in Qatar in 1948; tensions between Muslim and Sikh PCL employees in the wake of the Indo-Pakistan War of 1947; embezzlement of Qatar customs money.

The Qatar subject files are arranged by file number. As an example, in the reference 21/5, 21 represents the subject reference (Qatar), and 5 the file number. Not all subject files have survived, and the gaps in file numbers indicate likely gaps in the series.
