Founded in 1827 the GUC& J suffered set-backs in the 1840's and 50's although it continued to increase in size from 1862. R. Postgate in The Builders' history (p. 54) notes that all records of this union prior to 1863 were lost. In 1920-21 the GUC& J amalgamated into the Amalgamated Society of Woodworkers.
