Description

The collection consists of photographs, pamphlets and newspaper clippings collected by the Crowther family on early 20th century socialism such as literary expressions of socialism; biographies and newspaper clippings on political activists; photographs of Labour political events and meetings in the North West; local history material relating to Manchester; material relating to the co-operative movement; press cuttings from the First World War. The collection also consists of records created by the Crowther family in regards to their activities, including correspondence re the remembrance of the suffragettes; records relating to the Socialist Sunday School and the Labour Church Movement; published letters; correspondence regarding meetings for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. It also contains an index of the records within the collection.

The collection is listed to item level. The original order has been retained where possible and cross referenced to the original numbering supplied by the depositor.

Administrative / biographical background

Little has been recorded about the Crowther family, though they appear to have been involved with socialist activities in the North West of England from the 1900s. Interests included the Socialist Sunday School; the Labour Church Movement; the suffragettes and the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament.
