Description (What the record is about)
-
Loose uncaptioned portraits of Princess Indira of Kapurthala from India in the 1940s to Ibiza in the 1970s. A letter to a friend, written shortly before her death in 1979, is enclosed with the photographs. Biographical note: Maharajakumari Indira Devi (1912-1979), also known as Princess Indee, was the daughter of Maharaja Paramjit Singh and Maharani Brinda of Kapurthala. She left India for England in her early 20s, with the aim of taking up an acting career. She studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London, and worked briefly in films. During the Second World War she passed the St John Ambulance examination and drove ambulances during the Blitz. In 1942 she joined the BBC and hosted several series of radio broadcasts for Indian forces stationed in the Middle East. Popularly known as the 'Radio Princess', she continued to work for the BBC until 1968. She died in Ibiza in 1979.
