Administrative / biographical background

The records reflect the formal organisation of the business concerning partnership agreements. As well as being wax and tallow chandlers George Greenhill and Co were also oil merchants and dealers in soda, seltzer water and other mineral waters. George Greenhill's son, Charles Frederick Greenhill was a partner in a number of firms, Robert Jackson & Co, wine merchants and Italian warehousemen; Shipwash & Co dealers in soda water, seltzer waterand other mineral and German waters; Barrett & Co wax chandlers. In 1881 he desposed of his interest in all of these firms to Herbert Joseph Greenhill.
