Sun and Planet Engines. (25 items).

218. Wedgwood & Byerley, Etruria (WB). Sep., Oct., Dec. 1800, Mar. 1801, Jan. 1802, Aug. 1864. 25 items.
30 horse power double-acting sun & planet engine, with 28 inch cylinder, 6 foot stroke, parallel motion, cast iron beam, cast iron connecting rod.

Coloured original and reverse general view and plan of the engine and boiler, side elevation and plan of the working gear and eccentric, reverse longitudinal section of the boiler; coloured original and reverse sections of the engine and boiler houses and framing; reverse plan and section of the engine and boiler houses, framing and cistern showing the millwork and connections to the grindstones; arm for working gear straps, sketch side elevation and plan of working gear and eccentric, eccentric circle (reverse); sketch plan and elevation of the layout of the engine. All the drawings except the last item bear letter codes.
Projected design for the flint mill: reverse elevation and plan of the premises and engine house showing millwork, grindstones, floors, etc., dated 24 Sep. 1800; 3 sheets of notes, calculations and rough sketches, partly in John Southern's hand, with details of the power required, stones to be driven, notes on a mill powered by a Bateman & Sherratt engine, etc.
Also rough sketch for second boiler marked "This brought by John Pearson the 10 Sep. 1803…"; reverse cross-section of the boilers coded ICS, dated 19 Jan. 1804; rough plan for alterations and a new engine house, dated 1807; tracing of spur wheel from Josiah Wedgwood & Co., 6 Aug. 1864.
Also small reverse sketch plan and elevation of a flour mill, dated Oct. 1800 - these were prepared by Southern in response to an enquiry by Wedgwood & Byerley of 13 Oct. 1800, in connection with plans they had to establish a flour mill in London. The originals were sent to Etruria on 19 Oct.

For Josiah Wedgwood II and Thomas Byerley. Flint grinding mill, Etruria. Boulton Watt & Co., and especially John Southern, were closely involved in the development and design of Wedgwood & Byerley's flint mill, both the engine and the milling machinery. Wedgwood & Byerley initially asked about a 20 horse engine, then a 24 horse, and eventually ordered a 30 horse power engine with an iron beam on 9 Apr. 1801.
