Received the Military Medal for gallantry at Meteren a year ago " He along with others " says the official report, "performed the bicycle patrol reconnaissance which located and held the enemy in the face of great opposition south of Oosterstein. They displayed courage of the highest order despite the fact that a large number of the infantry were retiring disorganised. They held the ground and rallied the infantry until the arrival of a machine gun. They carried out most valuable reconnaissance under heavy rifle and machine gun fire and despite the loss they themselves sustained carried on with the greatest fortitude under very trying circumstances".
