The volume is divided into thirteen items:. Yemen, Zeila and Tadjoura Affairs (IOR/L/PS/5/392, ff 1A-30); Abstract of Contents of a Despatch Relating to the Steam Flotilla on the River Indus (IOR/L/PS/5/392, ff 31-36); Steam Flotilla on the Euphrates (IOR/L/PS/5/392, ff 37-57); Persian Gulf Affairs (IOR/L/PS/5/392, ff 58-172); Affairs in Sinde and Elsewhere (IOR/L/PS/5/392, ff 173-381); Abstract of Contents of a Despatch relating to the Slave Trade between the Coasts of Africa and the Persian Gulf (IOR/L/PS/5/392, ff 382-385); Letter from the Secretary to the Government of India to the Secretary to the Government of Bombay, enclosing Instructions from the Governor General to the Naval Commander in Chief (IOR/L/PS/5/392, ff 386-389); Persian Gulf Affairs (IOR/L/PS/5/392, ff 390-518); Aden and Mocha Affairs (IOR/L/PS/5/392, ff 519-596); Abstract of Contents of a Despatch relating to the Proceedings of the Court of Inquiry to Investigate the Conduct of Major Clibborn and the Detachment under his Command while Attempting to Relieve the Garrison of Kahun (IOR/L/PS/5/392, ff 597-607); Abstract of Contents of a Despatch relating to the Steam Flotilla on the River Indus (IOR/L/PS/5/392, ff 608-611); Letter from John Pollard Willoughby, Secretary to the Government of India, to Captain Stafford Bettesworth Haines, Political Agent at Aden, relating to the Proposed Mission to Shoa [Shewa] (IOR/L/PS/5/392, ff 612-614); Instructions to the Officer in Command of the Squadron Ordered on Duty to Aden, and the Slave Trade between the East Coast of Africa and Persian Gulf and Red Sea Ports (IOR/L/PS/5/392, ff 615-631); There is a note on folio 174 stating that enclosures to Bombay Secret Letter Number 14, dated 28 February 1841, are missing from this collection [volume], and another note on folio 508 stating that the enclosures to Bombay Secret Letter numbers 20-23, dated 27 to 31 March 1841, are also not in the collection (the volume does include abstracts of contents of numbers 20 and 22).

The enclosures to each despatch within the volume are divided by blue dividers (however there is no blue divider between IOR/L/PS/5/392, ff 597-607 and IOR/L/PS/5/392, ff 608-611). The sets of enclosures to despatches are arranged in chronological order from the front to the rear of the volume. The enclosures within each despatch are preceded by an abstract of contents, in which the despatch itself (not included) is numbered 1, the abstract of contents 2, and the enclosures 3, 4, etc. The numbers listed in the abstract of contents are recorded for reference on the verso of the last folio of each enclosure, along with the original reference, and a description of each enclosure.

- Foliation: the foliation sequence (used for referencing) commences at the first folio with 1A and terminates at the last folio with 631; these numbers are written in pencil, are circled, and are located in the top right corner of the recto side of each folio. The foliation sequence does not include the front and back covers, nor does it include the leading and ending flyleaves. A previous foliation sequence, which is also circled, has been superseded and therefore crossed out. The sequence contains one foliation anomaly, f 1A.
