These items relate to the donor's later brother Joseph Diamond. He was one of 7 children. His parents Morris and Sarah Diamond came to Britain in 1896, coming from Russia via Germany. Sarah Diamond (nee Brun) came from Niestadt (spelling uncertain), she married Morris Diamond in Russia. When they came to Britain they lived in Swansea till coming to Manchester c.1900. Morris Diamond became the manager of Lizar's (spelling uncertain) cap makers and he worked here for 21 years. The Diamonds lived in Stanley Street and later Heywood Street, Cheetham.
Joseph Diamond went to the Jews School. When World War I began he was employed as a page boy in the Midland Hotel, they wanted him to train to be a waiter. When he was called up at the age of 17½ he was working in the industry possibly being trained as a cutter. 3 appeals against call up were made on the grounds of the importance of his work for the country. These appeals were rejected and he went into the Cheshire Regiment. He was killed in action 6 weeks before the Armistice, he was aged 19.
