Lieutenant Commander W B C Weld-Forester RN

Collection of 16 ms letters, cards and telegrams to his mother covering his service as a midshipman in the battleship HMS GOLIATH (August 1914 - May 1915), including descriptions of his mobilisation from the Royal Naval College Dartmouth on the outbreak of war, of GOLIATH's part in the operations against the German cruiser KONIGSBERG in East Africa, and of how he survived the torpedoing of GOLIATH in the Dardanelles; as a midshipman in HMS COLOSSUS (1st Battle Squadron, Grand Fleet) at the Battle of Jutland; and as a junior officer in the destroyer HMS SCOUT (September 1917); together with other correspondence concerning his appointment as a midshipman in GOLIATH (August 1914 - February 1915) and the publication during the First Worl War of two autobiographical books FROM DARTMOUTH TO THE DARDANELLES and FROM SNOTTY TO SUB written in collaboration with his mother (November 1916 - August 1918), and six ms letters from Admiral of the Fleet Earl Beatty to his mother commenting in particular on women's contribution in wartime and the Battle of Jutland (March 1912 - May 1917).
