Crank Engines. (18 items).

521b. Clarke Maze & Co., Bristol (LU). Jul., Oct. 1838, May 1839, Mar. 1840. 18 items.
80 horse power double-acting crank engine, with 44 inch cylinder, 7 foot stroke, parallel motion, [cast iron beam, cast iron connecting rod].

Reverse plan and sections of the engine house, plan of the tunnel; sketch plan of position of pipes. The reverse drawings bear letter codes.
Also the following drawings sent by Wren & Bennett: coloured "elevation for the introduction of a 3rd 80 horse engine", longitudinal section, end and side elevations of the engine house, plan of the engine house and staircase etc.; plans of the various stonework within the engine house, as follows: 1st course of stonework over the tunnel, 2nd - 10th courses of stonework. These drawings were numbered by Wren & Bennett.

Original Portfolio or 'Book' No. 922 [?]. Catalogue of Old Engines p. 110.

For Clarke Maze & Co. Great Western Cotton Works, Bristol. This engine was placed in the main mill, as the first two 80 horse engines purchased were overloaded [See Portfolio 5/516]. It is not clear from the Drawings Office Index which Book the drawings were placed in. See Portfolios 5/516, 5/521a and 5/836 for other engines ordered by the firm. By Nov. 1860 the firm had become Bush Ames & Co. and by 1872 it was The Great Western Cotton Co.
