The site of the school was conveyed by James Everest of Gardner Street, brewer, to Julius Charles Hare, clerk, the rector of Herstmonceux, for £70 on 5 & 6 July 1839. On 27 February 1840 Hare conveyed the land for a nominal consideration to the rector and churchwardens under the Schools Sites Act. The site of the school garden was given in 1920 and the site for the school extension purchased in 1969. The school incorporated both mixed and infants' departments. In 1950 it became a Church of England controlled school
