Administrative / biographical background

Wokingham Isolation Hospital (also known as Wokingham Smallpox Hospital) was run jointly by Wokingham Rural District Council and Wokingham Borough acting as an Urban District Council. It was used on an ad-hoc basis for smallpox cases using temporary accommodation such as tents. It occupied premises in Barkham c.1903-1921; for tenancy agreements, see D/EX1870/4/4. A new site adjoining the old one was purchased in 1921.
