Description

Dock and Harbour Engines (9 items).

8 horse power independent crank engine, with [17? inch cylinder, 2½ foot stroke], parallel motion, cast iron beam, cast iron connecting rod.

Reverse plan of the engine and boiler houses, longitudinal section of the engine house and cross-section of the boiler house and boilers, sections of the engine and boiler houses and boilers; pulley - original and reverse drawings; plan and sections of the boilers showing steam and feed pipes, damper apparatus, grates etc. (sent to the Foundry); reverse sketch plan and section of the proposed connection of the 16 and 8 horse engines; partially coloured plan of the 16 and 8 horse engines and boilers and connections, signed by J. W. Fincham and marked "sent to Soho with Mr. Miller's letter of 13 Sep. 1842"; "Plan, elevation & section of present and auxiliary engine, for driving tilt hammer, Hercules fan bellows and lift hammer, Chatham Yard" - coloured drawings by John Burton, apprentice millwright. The reverse and pulley drawings bear letter codes.

Original Portfolio or 'Book' No. 933.

For the Honourable the Commissioners of the Navy. Auxiliary smithery engine, Chatham Dockyard. This engine was connected to the 16 horse engine above. The engine was originally made as a 10 horse power engine in 1828, and converted to an 8 horse and sold to Chatham Dockyard in 1842. This engine was omitted from the Catalogue of Old Engines.
