Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd. - Administration Files

The majority of the files in this series concern claims made against Bolckow Vaughan for damage to property allegedly caused by mining and other works undertaken by the company at their various ironstone mines and collieries in the North East of England. The content of files varies considerably but, along with correspondence, they also contain copies of indentures and leases, overviews of property, maps and plans.
Many of the files regarding damage contain correspondence between the company and agents/valuers (which it employed to assess any possible claims), claimants and claimants legal representatives. The correspondence is often considerable in size and detail, and reveals the process involved in making claims for damages caused by subsidence following the mining activities of the company, and also points to the varying attitudes to these claims.
