Title
Counterpart leases (building leases for 99 years unless otherwise stated), 1737, 1745 and 1778-1856
Date
1737-1856
Description

Unless otherwise stated, these are building leases for a term of 99 years. All building leases have a marginal plan by the Burgesses' surveyors, the Fairbanks. Before building leases were granted, the lessee had to present a plan and elevation for approval, or agree to a plan and elevation made by the Fairbanks. The building leases give only brief specifications (no. of houses, no. of storeys, value of houses). Once a house was build on a plot, houses to be build on other plots in the street had to conform exactly to this model. Original bundle of leases numbered 1-567. The original arrangement has been preserved, numbers in parenthesis being original endorsements. The original arrangement was topographical (although date order was confused): Leavygreave, Wilkinson Street, Portobello (including Gell Street), Broadlane, Upper Allen Street, Leicester Street, Edward Street, Solly Street, Pittfield, Devonshire Street, Eldon Street, Trafalgar Street, Balm Green, West Bar, Paradise Square, Snig Hill, Water Lane, Castle Green, Fargate - all in the township of Sheffield - followed by outlying properties in Owlerton, Walkley Bank, Attercliffe, a few surrenders of leases in miscellaneous places, Bell Hag and Fullwood.
