Description (What the record is about)
-
Survey volume H12 is the last in the series of twelve 'H' volumes, which covers the Ecclesiastical Corporations of Durham, which were transferred by commutation to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners under mid nineteenth century parliamentary legislation.; The preferments in this volume concern the estates of the Bishoprick of Durham, which were commuted to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on the following dates: 25 September 1855 for the Manor of Gateshead (date published in the London Gazette by Order in Council); and 1 October 1855 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette on 22 April 1856, by Order in Council.; This volume only contains details of copyhold enfranchisements for the Durham Bishopric Manors, following the Law of Property Act 1922, which abolished copyhold tenure. There are no survey reports within this volume.; However, it is important to mention that a portion of the Durham Episcopal Estates was re-endowed back to the Ecclesiastical Corporation on 30 June 1861 (effective date) and published in the London Gazette on 26 July 1861. These estates were then later transferred back to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners as Bishopric Late Permanent Estates under the Episcopal Endowments and Stipends Measure, 1943 on 5 April 1945 (effective date), published in the London Gazette by Order in Council on 27 March 1945.; The geographical areas covered within the volume include: the county of Durham, parishes of Auckland St Andrew, Bishop Auckland, Bishop Middleham, Bishopwearmouth, Boldon, Butterknowle, Byers Green, Castleside, Chester le Street, Cockfield, Cornforth, Darlington, Dunston, Durham St. Oswald, Easington, East Boldon, Evenwood, Frosterley, Gateshead, Hamsterley, Haughton le Skerne, Houghton le Spring, Lanchester, Lynesack, Margery Dale, Medomsley, Muggleswick, North Sunderland, Norton, Norton on Tees, Pittington, Redmarshall, Ryton, Ryton on Tyne, Sedgefield, Sherburn, Stanhope, Stanley, Stella, Stockton, Stockton upon Tees [Stockton on Tees], Sunderland, Tow Law, West Auckland, West Boldon, Westgate, Whickham, Whitburn, Witton Gilbert, Witton Park, Wolsingham and Whitton le Wear; and the county of Northumberland, parish of Bedlington.
