Daniel John Williams was born in Cwmtwrch, Swansea 28 August 1882 the son of a Colliery Fireman he was educated at the University College of South Wales & Monmouthshire in Cardiff. A School Teacher with the London County Council he attested for the 18th Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers at Camberwell, London 8 November 1915 he had previously served in the 1st (Volunteer) Battalion South Wales Borderers. Williams served in the UK in the 63rd , 64th and 190th Training Battalions before being appointed to a commission in the Machine Gun Corps 25 April 1917. Williams served in France from 1 July 1917 with the 13th Company MGC and was killed in action 5 October 1917 at Passchendaele.

On 4th October the battle of Broodseinde commenced at 0600 with attacks made by British, Australian and a New Zealand Division the Germans counter attacked in many sectors the Germans counter attacked new gains by the British five times each time heavy losses were inflicted on the attacking Germans by Artillers and Small Arms fire. 2.Lieut Williams was killed on the 5th no doubt holding newly captured positions, his death being reported with another officer of his Company Lieut J Gibson. The 13th Company lost eight Machine Guns damaged or destroyed on 4th October and on the 5th were relieved by another Company.
