Description

The papers listed below relating to Inquests held by the Coroner were found among the Quarter Sessions Records in the strongroom at the Castle. The papers fall into two groups; the first covering the period 1869 to 1873 for inquests taken by John Gregory the Coroner for the Leicester District (CO.1/1-16) and by William Napier Reeve (Clerk of the Peace) as Deputy Coroner to E. H. M. Clarke the Coroner for the Melton Mowbray District; the second group covers the years 1928 to 1943, and are the Inquests held by G. E. Bouskell the Coroner for the Leicester or Southern District.

The papers were bundled for the four quarters of each year, and those for the Twentieth Century until 1940 were also put into numbered packets, one for each Inquest. It seems probable from the composition of Bundle CO.1/18 below, which is made up of odd numbered packets for various years, that the other packets for Inquests held before 1928 (by Mr. Bouskell) were destroyed in that year.)
