The Society was founded in 1842 by Mr George Fletcher and other members of the Unsworth South at a room in Kilner Croft Mill, and then in a small Sunday school building on the site of the present grave yard. The original chapel itself was built in 1847, and replaced by the current building in 1980. The society was originally part of the Bury circuit, but was transferred to the new Radcliffe Wesleyan circuit in 1889, and remained in the Radcliffe Methodist circuit after Methodist Union. For the records of Bury Wesleyan Methodist Circuit see CBW: for the records of the Radcliffe Wesleyan and current Methodist Circuits, see CMW and CMR respectively. All these records were deposited by Radcliffe Methodist Circuit in 2000.
