Administrative / biographical background

The Baptist Church in Stalybridge dates back to 1806 when members first met in a garret in Cocker Hill. Later they transferred to a room on Rassbottom Brow and in 1813 the Particular Baptists seceded. In 1826 they moved from Rassbottom to a chapel in Cross Street (Mount Pleasant?) which had to be demolished when the railway was built. Whilst waiting for the new church in Wakefield Road. (Mount Olivet) to be built they met in the Foresters Hall. Wakefield Road Church opened in 1848. In the late 1960's the General Baptists of Wakefield Road and the Particular Baptists of Cross Leech Street joined forces to build a new church at Ambleside, Ridge Hill which was opened in 1971. The older churches were then demolished.
