Administrative / biographical background

The donor's wife, Kathleen Fitch, is the daughter of William Berrie and Ethel Bell. They both lived in Withington and married in 1913. They had 4 children, Kathleen, the eldest, and 3 sons, Philip, Robert and Geoffrey. William, born in 1880, worked at Samuel Yarwood's Tannery in Miles Platting (his mother's family business). His father's family ran a dyeing and dry cleaning company started by John Berrie in Manchester in 1849. It had a works Newton Heath. William's mother, Mary was the daughter of Samuel Yarwood. The parents of William's wife, Ethel, were John Bell and Emily Brown. John came from Galston in Scotland, where his father was a Headmaster. He moved south to Manchester to work for Dewhursts Ltd., the textile company, later becoming a manager. The donor was born in Forest Hill, London. He obtained employment with A.E.I. Ltd., Trafford Park and settled in the area.
