Papers of W J Crittenden
The papers in /6-/10 are artificial collections of documents assembled by W J Crittenden, a churchwarden, 1949-1980. Some of the papers reflect his active involvement in many areas of the life of the church, including organising the various church anniversaries, while others were apparently assembled by him for display on those anniversary occasions. The present arrangement derives from the original arrangement of the material which was in two large packets labelled 40 th and 50 th anniversaries.

INTRODUCTION
Emmanuel, Tolworth is the daughter church of Christ Church, Surbiton Hill. A site was acquired for the church in Grand Avenue, Tolworth in 1933, the foundation stone was laid in 1934 and the church opened in 1935, when it was dedicated and licensed for services. It was licensed for marriages in 1958 after the re-development of the church. (See 3407/1/10). Baptisms are also performed but no registers have yet been deposited. The history of the church is fully described in the booklet produced on the occasion of the jubilee in 1985 (see 3407/8/8), and the diversity of its activities is reflected in the records in this deposit.
Until 1983 Christ Church and Emmanuel had separate committees consisting of their members of the Parochial Church Council. The minutes had to be ratified at a full meeting of the PCC of the whole parish. Since 1983 each committee has been reconstituted as a separate PCC meeting with agendas related specifically to the individual church. Some PCC meetings, however, still have a common agenda. (See 3407/2/3-11 for minutes of Emmanuel Church Committee, 1934-1983).
Material on the major church re-development of 1958 can be found in 3407/4/ and in 3407/7/3.
