* A Great War M.C. Group to Major J.H. Des Voeux, North Staffordshire Regiment and Machine Gun Corps, one of the first Officer`s to be commissioned into the M.G.C., Later service saw him present at the Jallianwala Massacre, India 13.4.1919, Military Cross, G.V.R., unnamed as issued, in presentation case of issue, 1914-15 Star (2. Lieut. J.H. Des Voeux. N. Staff.R.), British War and Victory Medals (Major J.H. Des Voeux.), Defence and War Medals, good very fine and better, together with dress miniature awards, a large hand drawn and coloured map on velum `Map of German Offences 1918`, 122 x 149cm WW1 Machine Gunners` Pocket Book, Field Service Pocket Book, and The Mounted Officer`s Book on Horses and Mules for Transport, Illustrated, red cloth hard back and a photograph album assembled by Des Voeux, covering his service with the Staffordshire Regiment from Devonport, France and Flanders, Trench Life and Hospital Ships the latter section shows a series of images titled `with 46 Squadron on 3 days course at Le Hameau. Jan1-4th 1918` M.C., London Gazette 3.6.1918 2nd Lt. (A.Capt.) John Hamilton Des Voeux. N. Staff. R., attd. M.G. Corps. Major John Hamilton Des Voeux (b.1898), Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, Hampshire Regiment (aged 16) 3.9.1914, advanced to Major, North Staffordshire Regiment and attached to the Machine Gun Corps, according to the biography included with this lot Des Voeux was present at the Jallianwala Massacre. The Jallianwala or Armritsar Massacre took place on the afternoon of 13th April 1919, about 10,000 people including women and children gathered the garden of Jallianwala Bagh near Armritsar, India to hold a peaceful protest against the arrest of two leaders of the Indian National Congress. The order was given by The British General, Edward Dyer without any kind of warning to open fire at the unarmed crowd. For twenty minutes or so the soldier`s unloaded bullets at the crowd, killing 400 and severely wounding a 1000. The aftermath of the massacre resulted in an Indian uprising and insurgence and ultimately led to independence for Indian. (12)
