Son of Mr and Mrs JS Engall of Goldsmith Ave Acton. Enlisted as a Rifleman in September 1914 on leaving St Pauls School at the age of 18. In January 1915 he was offered a commission in his own Regt. Last March he was seconded for duty as Battalion to a Machine Gun Company. (The Times 8 July 1916)

Originally enlisted in Queen’s Hall, London on 3/9/14 into 16 London Regt (Westminsters) as No 3141. He spent two years in the Cadet Corps 10 Middlesex Regt from 1910-11. Discharged to commission 15/1/15. Height 5' 11". His commission application, dated 14/12/14, states that he preferred a commission in 9 London Regt, occupation articled chartered accountant. In December 1916 his father was 54. (Officers Papers PRO)
