Indenture dated 8 April 28 Henry VIII beween Elys Bradshaw, Mayor, and the burgesses and citizens of Chichester, and Mr. William Fleshmonger, Dean. The Dean having paid to the City 600 marks for the redemption of the fee farm long paid to Lord Rosse and his ancestors, the City covenant that they will grant to the Dean an annuity of £13. 6 s. 8 d. charged on their property, paid in the chapel of St. George in the Cathedral at All Saints, Candlemas, St. George, and St. James Apostle, with a penalty of £3. 6 s. 8 d. if this is twenty days in arrear and power of distress, and will, if required, make further assurance. Heretofore the commons of the City, victuallers, butchers, brewers, bak[ers, m]illers, fishmongers, tanners, and innholders, have had heavy fines assessed at all lawdays for every disorder, [and the] inferior commons, tipplers selling bread, beer, ale, eggs, apples, butter, cheese, oatmeal, candles, and suchlike [have been assessed] at 3 d. for each default, on account of the charge of the fee farm. In consideration of the Dean's grant the Mayor and citizens shall make agreement, 'to [re]mayne in the lyger of the saide Citie,' that henceforth no victualler born in the king's obeisance or dominion, as butchers, brewers, bakers, millers, fishmongers, taverners, and innholders, shall be taxed and amerced over 12 d. yearly, nor tipplers or sellers of bread, ale, beer, eggs, apples, butter, cheese, oatmeal, candles, and the like, shall be taxed and amerced over 3 d. yearly, save in cases of contempt. This ordinance shall be read to the commons in the common hall before the election of the next Mayor. After William Fleshmonger's death the Mayor and citizens shall say for him all such prayers as they say for Mr. Ivo Darell, late residentiary; these shall be said on the north side of the Cathedral, against the south side of the Jesus altar next to William Fleshmonger's tomb immediately after the prayers for Ivo Darrell on the accustomed festival days.
