Description (What the record is about)
-
Survey volume LM is the fifth in the series of six alpha reference volumes, which covers various preferments transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners under mid nineteenth century parliamentary legislation.; The volume covers the surveys carried out on behalf of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners by their appointed Land Agents Messrs Cluttons. The preferments in this volume contain the following: Exeter Chapter Estates, which were transferred by commutation to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 25 March 1862 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette by Order in Council on September 1862; and the Bristol Chapter Estates, which were transferred by commutation to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 1 January 1862 (effective date) and published in the London Gazette on 10 June 1862 by Order in Council. ; These surveys were essential to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, as it was the most comprehensive way of clearly ascertaining the extent and condition of the preferments that had been transferred. Also as the estates had been in the hands of the Ecclesiastical Corporations for so long, these surveys were often the only means that the Ecclesiastical Commissioners had of establishing church title, as the Orders in Council only gave a general overview of what was being commuted.; As preferments were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners from the Ecclesiastical Corporations, the various holdings of the estates were either kept or sold; the land agents supplied recommendatory advice on this matter with the survey reports.; The volume also has added annotations often regarding the disposal of property or land since the surveys were originally carried out and therefore incorporates later dates.; The geographical areas covered within the volume includes: the county of Devonshire, parishes of Aylesbeare, Broadhembury, Winterbourne Monkton, Fordington, West Anstey, Buckerell, East Budleigh and Upottery [Up-Ottery]; the county of Gloucestershire, parishes of St. George, St. Philip, St. Jacob (Bristol), Clifton and Churchdown; and the county of Somerset, parishes of East Coker and Somerton.
