Description (What the record is about)
-
Ms transcription (1293 pp), together with a comprehensive index for each calendar year, of his diaries covering his experiences as a prisoner of war at Changi camp, Singapore (February-June 1942) and in various British and Dutch camps in Thailand (June 1942-September 1945) where, when not sick in hospital, he was employed on working parties, principally on the construction and maintenance of the Burma-Thailand railway, and as a member of anti-malaria and anti-cholera parties. The diary includes valuable evidence about the privations suffered by the prisoners, notably the shortage of rations, the lack of medical facilities, the absence of any contact with home and assaults on them by their guards. Sharp was taken prisoner at the fall of Singapore, where he was serving as a signalman at Malaya Command Signals HQ.
